About HBOT

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Most people are familiar with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as a treatment for “the bends” in scuba divers, however, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used since the 1800’s to help the body heal from various other conditions. Technology has come a long way since the 1800’s, but at its core, the goals of HBOT remains very much the same.

Oxygen is essential for the human body to function and heal. Typically, when our bodies are injured, the damaged tissue becomes deficient in oxygen. With this decrease, cells do not function properly and bodily functions decline. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of breathing 100% Oxygen (as opposed to the normal 21% we breathe in regular air) at a prescribed atmospheric depth, for a prescribed period of time.

The pressure created in the chamber saturates the tissues of the body, optimizing oxygen delivery. Studies have conclusively shown (link to research tab) that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is tremendously successful with helping the body heal and improving functionality.

Currently, HBOT is most commonly found in a hospital setting, and with an uncomfortable, aged, often single occupant hyperbaric chamber. The premiere choice is proud to offer the same benefits of inpatient HBOT, with the convenience of an outpatient setting and the gold standard in hyperbaric chambers.

Hyperoxygenation

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen carried into the bloodstream, enabling mo re oxygen to dissolve deep into the body’s tissues, including the lymphatics and t cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This reverses hypoxia (areas of the body that are low in oxygen), helping to oxygenate the cells and tissues that are at risk of dying or that are in a non-functioning state.

Anti-Inflammation

HBOT downregulates inflammatory pathways and constricts blood vessels to allow less leakage of fluid, thus decreasing swelling. In the long term HBOT has epigenetic effects, turning off the genes responsible for inflammation. Inflammation is a key factor in why our bodies degrade with time.

Mitochondrial Support

HBOT allows mitochondria, the batteries of our cells, to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP stores and releases energy necessary for many cellular processes and is the main energy source for our bodies. When oxygen -carrying capacity is threatened, your body is in jeopardy of not creating enough ATP. HBOT allows 1200% more oxygen to enter your circulatory system directly into your plasma, helping to optimize cellular energy production.

Stem Cell Proliferation

HBOT can increase stem cells in circulation by eight-fold. These stem cells already exist in the body and have the unique ability to diffe rentiate into any type of tissue, making them a valuable tool for regeneration and healing.

Neovascularization

HBOT stimulates growth of new blood vessels in the body, which increases circulation, allowing revitalized tissues to thrive even after the treatment protocol has been completed.

Antimicrobial Effect

HBOT improves the immune system by weakening infection -causing bacteria. It also increases the body’s natural antioxidants and free radical scavengers, which increases the ability to fight disease and infection. It can also synergize with certain antibiotics, improving their efficacy.

HBOT is also used for a variety of health conditions that are not yet covered by insurance, but which have shown success or obvious benefit in trials, such as:

FAQ

General Question

At The premiere choice we are committed to ensuring that all staff are well-equipped to provide safe, effective, and informed care to our patients. This FAQ is designed to help quickly address common questions and concerns from patients regarding our services, treatments, and protocols.

Please note that specific protocols and medical guidelines may vary based on the discretion of the Medical Director and the unique circumstances of each center. If you need further clarification on any topic, please discuss with your local center.

The premiere choice uses a certified FDA 510K, multiplace hyperbaric chamber meaning more than one person can and will dive with you. Our chamber boasts the same high safety standards as those used in hospitals and military facilities, while going above and beyond current standards in comfort and customization.

Like any medical treatment, HBOT does carry some risks, such as barotrauma (injury caused by pressure changes) most commonly to the ears, oxygen toxicity, and claustrophobia. However, these are extremely rare and are mitigated with proper care.
Although all medical treatments come with some risk, The premiere choice aims to successfully mitigate any potential negative reaction by using a state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber with an open design, and expert clinical staff, as well as offering a pre-dive physical to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

A typical HBOT session lasts between 60 and 120 minutes. The exact duration depends on the condition being treated and the specific protocol being followed.
The number of sessions varies, depending on the condition being treated and the patient's response to therapy. Some conditions may require as few as 5-10 sessions, while others often require 20-40, or more. Making new blood vessels (neo angiogenesis) is the cornerstone of treating many disease processes such as wound care, flaps, and graphs, and generally requires at least 20 HBOT dives in order to kickstart this function.

Yes, most patients can resume normal activities, including driving, immediately after their HBOT session. However, it’s always best to consult with your referring physician about your specific circumstances.

Prior to treatment, please avoid alcohol or carbonated drinks. It’s best to avoid smoking and any other tobacco products during your treatment period, as they may interfere with the body’s ability to transport and absorb oxygen. This can directly affect the time it takes you to heal. Otherwise, there are no restrictions for food or activity before or after your treatment. We encourage you to have healthy meals and stay hydrated.
Insurance coverage for HBOT depends on your insurance provider and the condition being treated. HBOT is generally covered for FDA-approved conditions but may not yet be covered for off-label uses. It’s advisable to check with your insurance provider for specific details. Our staff can assist with this process, and payment arrangements can be made for treatments not covered by health insurance.
After check in for your visit, you’ll be asked to change into 100% cotton scrubs to minimize the risk of static electricity. Jewelry, watches, and electronic devices should be left outside the chamber. All belongings will be stored safely in individual lockers, provided at your visit.

As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel a sensation similar to what you experience during an airplane takeoff, such as ear popping. The session itself is usually comfortable, and you can relax, watch TV, or even sleep during the treatment.

Oxygen is required for the human body to heal, however, we don’t regularly get enough of it. By increasing oxygen levels in the blood, HBOT helps to enhance tissue repair, reduce inflammation, fight infections, and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, all of which contribute to faster healing.
